Pipeline SMAW Downhill Welding Specialist

Location: Cedar Hill | Employment Type: Full Time | Pay: Competitive with Overtime Opportunities

A Day in the Role

Morning starts in Cedar Hill with a safety briefing and a quick scan of the WPS and SOPs you’ll follow for the day. You verify heat numbers and material specs, then lay out your cut. With an oxy‑acetylene torch you prep the joint, fit it tight, and set your positioners. You drop a clean, consistent SMAW (Stick) downhill root, fill and cap with precision, and switch to GMAW where the procedure requires. Between passes, you inspect your work, document traceability, and keep the team moving. When a junior welder struggles on a branch fit-up, you step in—coaching technique and reinforcing code requirements. You finish the day with quality checks, keeping safety and productivity front and center.

What You’ll Tackle

• Execute complex, code‑compliant pipe welds that meet industry standards and company safety policies
• Perform high‑quality SMAW (Stick) downhill and proficient GMAW work
• Use oxy‑acetylene torches for cutting, fitting, and joint preparation
• Read and apply blueprints, schematics, welding codes, WPS, and SOPs
• Lay out, cut, fit, weld, and prepare weld specimens for evaluation
• Inspect welds for quality, defects, and maintain full traceability documentation
• Operate weld positioners and turntables as needed
• Verify materials against specifications and record all identification
• Mentor apprentices and junior welders to elevate team skills
• Drive productivity and continuous improvement while upholding OSHA safety rules

Welder Qualification Testing

• Initial SMAW Welder Qualification is required
• Timeline: Up to 24 total hours (scheduled across 3–8 hour days )
• Process includes:
  • SOP and WPS orientation
  • Test prep (layout, cut, fit, weld, and specimen preparation)
  • Formal weld testing and inspection

What You Bring

• 5+ years in pipe fitting and pipe welding
• Demonstrated mastery of SMAW and strong proficiency in GMAW
• Exceptional STICK weld quality—this is central to the role
• Ability to interpret drawings and apply welding codes accurately
• Experience with 12” Butt & Branch weld testing preferred

Preferred Certifications

• API 1104
• ASME welding certifications

Certifications are a plus but not required if your experience and skill are strong.
