Job Summary
The Business Office Receptionist provides exceptional customer service to all patients and guests by communicating in a professional, respectful manner. The Receptionist answers inbound calls and makes outbound calls for follow-up, along with greeting and assisting patients and guests. The Receptionist clearly explains Petersburg Medical Center (PMC) and Patient Financial Services (PFS) policies, insurance processes, patient balances, and assists guests, visitors and employees.

Medical Accounts and Billing

  • Verify eligibility information and update patient insurance, demographics, and guarantor details.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and resolving patient billing issues.
  • Evaluate accounts from both insurance and self-pay perspectives.
  • Advocate on behalf of patients in communication with insurance companies.
  • Work assigned billing queues / worklists and maintain expected performance metrics.
  • Accurately receive, process and post payments, discounts and adjustments.

Collaboration and Conduct

  • Work cooperatively with other PMC departments to help resolve billing issues.
  • Maintain professionalism, respect, and confidentiality in all interactions.
  • Uphold PMC's mission, vision, values, and standards for service excellence.
  • Adapt to changing expectations and support departmental goals.
  • Continuously seek improvement in process affecting quality care and service.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation with a compassionate approach to patient advocacy.
  • Knowledge of PMC financial assistance and other patient resources.
  • Ability to assist in interpreting and explaining insurance policies and patient account information and to understand and explain insurance Explanation of Benefits (EOBs).
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with federal / state regulations.
  • Ability to foster trust, collaboration, and a positive working environment.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and proactive in improving processes and supporting team goals.

Working Environment

This position operates in a clean, well-lit office environment and serves as a front-facing role responsible for greeting and welcoming patients, visitors and guests. Duties are performed at a desk. The role involves regular use of a computer, telephone, and standard office equipment, along with routine clerical tasks. This is an onsite position located at PMC's main building.

Requirements for Employment Include --

  • Background Check. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background investigation conducted by the State of Alaska in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Drug Screening. All employees must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening, which includes testing for marijuana.
  • Immunization Compliance. Employees are required to meet all immunization requirements as mandated by the State of Alaska and Federal regulations governing healthcare facilities.
